Public options for essentials, strategic price interventions, investment in housing and childcare — this is antifascist economics. It tackles the material conditions that make authoritarianism appealing.
In making life livable, democracy defends itself.

But windfall profits flow upward: in 2022, half of record fossil-fuel profits went to the richest 1%; only 1% reached the bottom half.

Essentials like housing, food, energy, & childcare are not ordinary commodities. When their prices surge, they trigger redistribution shocks.

Our research identifies these sectors as key drivers of inequality. Link: scholarworks.umass.edu/entities/pub...

“My friends, the world is changing. It's not a question of whether that change will come. It's a question of who will change it.” @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social

People are choosing real alternatives instead of continuity. Mamdani stands for an antifascist economics in the name of the many. 🧵

Mainstream economics continues to rely on Newtonian mathematics — using calculus to optimise, subject to constraints, an approach not suited to understanding macroeconomics or human behavior.

Vielen Dank!

As I work toward an anti-fascist economics, my perspective has been newly sharpened. We're thrilled to welcome our baby, who is reminding us daily of the value of our collective future.

Germany inscribed austerity in its constitution. The “debt brake” is so rigid that The Economist has called it an instrument of “self harm”. Reform is overdue.

I’m honored to be appointed by the Finance Ministry to serve on the expert commission in charge of fiscal rules.

Abundance for the many is about making essentials affordable by all means necessary.

Great conversation about the need for a new economic policy agenda that goes beyond removing blockages and waiting for corporations to do the rest.

Tariffs can once more give companies cover to raise prices without losing market share. Once this dynamic actually kicks in, it could become self-reinforcing.

High time to find new solutions for the affordability crisis. City-owned grocery stores to address access and costs are worth trying. A Mexican policy stabilizes the prices of essentials based on agreements with supermarkets. It could be replicated.

My 5 cents

NYC is in the middle of an affordability crisis of essentials like food now exacerbated by Trump’s austerity policies eroding SNAP. @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social’s municipal grocery stores are an important experiment. The old ways have failed. Policy innovation is necessary to pave a way out.

How it started

A heterodox economist & her PhD student argue for buffer stocks in essentials for inflation preparedness in an age of overlapping emergencies.

How it’s going

New EU Stockpile Strategy suggests stockpiles in essentials like food for inflation prevention.

But is it really possible that New York City could have a socialist mayor?

“It would hardly be the first,” Galbraith says. “There was La Guardia.”

“Inflation will always and everywhere be fought in the labor market!”

Main empirical finding: The pandemic-era inflation resulted from shocks to prices given wages.

Main policy conclusion: Controlling inflation remains all about the labor market.

The climate emergency means cost shocks. Analyzing 130k earnings calls, we show that cost shocks make executives happy. Shocks coordinate price hikes pushing up profits & triggering sellers' inflation.

Catastrophe can be good news for profits!
