Participant observation is what provides ethnography with some of its most valuable insights. I'm finding more and more "ethnographic" studies where the immersion piece is set aside, granted, some are from other disciplines. Hoping this was not an anthro conference.

I teach ethnographic methods to intro students. Over time I've emphasized writing research over other methods and this makes this approach even more critical. I also appreciate your idea of citing in your rubrics and assignment instructions.
