Nonetheless, the city could serve as an excellent gateway to Tokyo for passengers arriving on far away flights. It will be worth monitoring to watch how this impacts the airport and what it means for passengers for their commute into and out of central Tokyo and other parts of the Tokyo metro area.

The land that the airport city will exist on is currently under the ownership of nine different towns and cities, which likely means that administrative issues could drag on due to the large number of parties in involved.

The development of Narita Airport City would serve the purpose of creating more supporting industries around the airport, and would also help justify increased transportation from all across the Tokyo metro area to the airport, despite adequate transportation already existing.

Narita Airport City is a unique project simply due to the fact it serves the world's largest metro area - Tokyo - with 37 million people. Despite the region's incredible size, the airport is actually located a fair bit outside of it and has primarily long-haul flights for that reason.

Jedda Airport City will be interesting to monitor to see how it develops in conjunction with other Saudi goals in tourism and new cities, as well as to see if the new facilities will make the city self-sufficient or if it will simply integrate into the larger Jeddah area.
November 8, 2025 at 11:55 PM
With each zone having their own detailed plans, this masterplan emulates a self sufficient city much more than other airport cities. Its position on the outskirts of Jedda supports the possibility of it acting more independent as well.

The project is quite an ambitious one and looks to include 4 distinct zones: an Exhibition Circuit, a Business District, a Fun Zone, and a Calm Community Residential & Cultural District. Highlights include a University for Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Restaurants, Entertainment, and an Arena.

Jeddah Airport City is perhaps one of the least surprising airport city developments given the Saudi government's heavy investments in new cities and tourism as they aim to diversify away from oil. It should come at no surprise the project is part of 'Kingdom Vision 2030'.

It will be interesting to see if Salalah Airport City helps link the region with the rest of Oman and the Middle East from both a population and cargo perspective. It should also be interesting to compare and contrast master-plans with Muscat Airport City.
November 5, 2025 at 4:39 AM
Salalah Airport City is largely being created to promote the area as a logistics hub by connecting the vibrant port with the airport for shipment of goods. A pilot project was done before the development of the master-plan with this specific idea in mind.
November 5, 2025 at 4:39 AM
Oman's Westernmost major city, Salalah is located far away from the majority of the country's population in the East. Its selection as an airport to have a new city plan constructed represents an attempt to diversify not only through industry but also geographically.
November 5, 2025 at 4:39 AM
Salalah Airport City is another of Oman's National Aviation Strategy 2030 airport cities (see previous post). Geographically, it would make sense to be administered independently from Salalah as it is on the outskirts of the city (from a North-South point of view).

Following Muscat Airport City will be interesting to see if it has any broader impact on Omani urbanism and to follow how it develops alongside other projects part of National Aviation Strategy 2030.
November 5, 2025 at 4:13 AM
One of the things that makes this project particularly interesting is the fact that Oman has largely been known to preserve historic forms of urbanism in its cities rather than modernize them like the rest of the world. Could these airport cities mark the beginning of a change to this?
November 5, 2025 at 4:13 AM
Additionally, there is an emphasis on creating aviation related projects in surrounding land to the airport as well as a goal to be a logistical hub to encourage cargo shipping through the airport.

The master-plan aims for a "Corporate Cluster with commercial spaces allocated for corporate international and local companies, which will be supported by flexible meeting spaces, retail offerings, hospitality spaces, and limited residential spaces to serve employees and their visitors."

Muscat Airport City is one of multiple new airport cities (see future posts) Oman is looking to develop as part of the National Aviation Strategy 2030. Like Perth, it remains unclear if this will simply be a development within Muscat or a newly administered city.
