Senior Advisor - Learning and #Evaluation at KABOOM!
Past President of Eastern Evaluation and Research Society (EERS).
Lives in Hyattsville, MD. Born in El Paso, TX. Syracuse alumni.
This past week I was part of a 12 person team of @kaboom-play.bsky.social staff that worked across the state of Minnesota to identify playgrounds in need of replacement on or near tribal and indigenous lands.

Saw amazing playgrounds and ones that were probably older than me.

And where you build the playground matters.

Parks in high need neighborhoods with playgrounds (as defined by the KABOOM! Playground Inequity Prioritization Index) get over 9,000 more visitors per year when compared to parks in typical neighborhoods.

Who builds the playground matters - playgrounds built in partnership with KABOOM! get 25,000 more visitors per year.

The age of the game playground matters. As you would expect, newer playgrounds get more visitors to parks than older playgrounds.

Every year of playground age results in about 600 visitors a year.

We recently bought a dill plant for the garden, and before planting it noticed a large caterpillar. We kept the plant in a pot so as to not disturb our new friend, and yesterday it made a grand appearance.

Here is the primary finding from the analysis.

Building any playground leads to increased use of the public space / park. But building a playground with @kaboom-play.bsky.social leads to a much larger increase in use of the space.

Name a comfort food that you eat today that you did NOT eat when you were younger.

For whatever reason: your tastes are different now, you did not have access to it as a kid. Etc.

I grew up in Texas, and moved to Maryland after grad school, so mine is Bergers Cookies.

Good news everybody.
After nearly 15 years of dialogue, I finally convinced my mother in law that the most honorable way to eat half a bagel is on the left, and NOT the right.
She had insisted on eating top half only and leaving the bottom for others.

You: what fun stuff did you do on the last day of 2024?

Me: I read old #evaluation documents from the 70s to find some foundational thinking that led to modern logic model theory. That’s fun right?

I went to a signing both of them did. In 2000. At a Borders. I came straight there form a work event, so I was the only person in a suit.

They got a kick out of how overdressed I was, and they asked me to sit with them as they signed stuff. I got several things from each of them. Super fun night.

Using crowdsourced GPS data (primarily from cell phones) we were able to determine that KABOOM! playgrounds led to increased use of public spaces.
