Isn’t the problem more to do with ownership of news outlets dictating editorial policy which then makes the outlet untrustworthy? I trust the work of established journalists but I am skeptical of anything printed in various outlets regardless of the authors pedigree

But you have no way of knowing if those sources are an accurate reflection of the body of knowledge on the topic, or just cherry picked abstractions without doing your own search and readings.
