That was crazy and very distressing as children do not discriminate hatefully like adults! However, when I was a child the mermaids in my books were green, which I thought was logical as they lived in the sea!

The woman at the back on the right looking out to the viewer was a common device used by painters of the period - she serves to draw our attention to the scene in the foreground!
