Fighting to save a desert aquifer from capitalism

Herded by dogs
Those legislators who paved the way for Riverview? Republicans. The A.G. who convinced Riverview to spend $11M to fund water access for communities and individuals? Democrat. People who will benefit? Everyone in this deep red rural area.

So the settlement A.G. Kris Mayes announced today is a big deal. It doesn't solve the existential problem of industrial ag in an area undergoing climate-induced desertification. But it does offer a new tool that rural communities might want to use to get some relief.

When domestic wells go dry, people often don't have the $20K-50K needed to drill a new well. They end up hauling water or moving away. Their biggest financial asset, their home, is almost worthless. Meanwhile, the profits keep rolling in for Riverview.

The area has been in a drought for 25 years. The water table has been dropping faster and Riverview has dug wells far deeper than others have. When others' wells go dry, Riverview still has water -- until it becomes too expensive for even them to squeeze more out.

Groundwater extraction was unregulated. @keithschneider69.bsky.social reported that Riverview was using 110,000 acre-feet of groundwater a year, close to what the city of Tucson used. In the far S.E. Arizona desert, groundwater is finite. No river feeds it.

Riverview also operates in N. & S. Dakota. In AZ, the state legislature paved the way in 2011 by taking away counties' ability to restrict the size of dairy feedlots. Two of the legislators from Riverview's district still serve. Another one is now on the county's board of supervisors.

What the Bureau of Reclamation and the Army Corps of Engineers and the Dawes Act etc. started, data centers will finish, with a bit of a colonial boomerang effect.
