I admittedly don't have a huge range of reading done here, but this is how most veterans fiction tends to go from my experience. The soldiers are all assholes, but have agency while the civilians are pathetic victims.

In a time when religion is mainly used as a rhetorical front for conservatism (their religion is typically conservatism) it was enlightening to have a man out there who seemed to genuinely believe in God even if that God is not real. There was a holiness there that one could not help but respect.

Consistent theme of politics is that no one knows what people to their left think. Socialists read about liberals and conservatives, liberals read about conservatives, conservatives do not read about liberals or socialists.
