A majority of people overestimate the game industry in general. I think there's an article where Arrowhead (helldivers 2 devs) talk about how players are constantly complaining about the lack of contact in an update and they're just like "wtf that took 6 months to make people."

I think the original games focused more on power fantasy ( which made sense if you read the books) while the newer ones are more about humanizing Master Chief. Halo 2 stood out more to people because 1: the multiplayer and 2 The Arbiter's story line actually went really hard.
