One of my favourite stories I've ever written, and the only one I've ever cried while writing. 🥲
The Jesus Booth The paper he handed her was grimy. He worked with grease, maybe a mechanic. Kiss teeth. Simone wiped her hand under her desk, a cheap yellowy wood etched with the unintentional marks of a busy office. She tapped at the keyboard, then stamped and stuck the form in a tray on the desk. “It's a 42, a ten, and another ten,” she said to the man who wasn't meeting her eyes. He handed her a card. She swiped it, then returned to the greasy man, his card, his IDs, and his receipt. He didn't thank her. “Thank you for choosing the Jesus Booth. May the Lord save your soul today.” Her voice was mechanical. She pressed a button next to her, and leaned into her mic, “78,” she said. Her voice rang out through the PA speakers.
