There is a lot more detail to the story but I hope this gives you an insight into one of the hellfire clubs.

Let me know if you want to know more about the real Hellfire Clubs! It was my PhD topic!

I recommend visiting West Wycombe for a day out
- the church, mausoleuam, caves (shop and cafe), village shops, garden centre, Palladian mansion and pleasure gardens are really spectacular.

Maybe give it two days and stay overnight at the haunted pub!

It is so massive that it blocks the view of the village church. Except for one element, a golden ball used as a viewing point across the landscape, lined with lush velvet seating and frequented by Dashwood and his special lady friends…

Theleme was believed to be in the shape of a hexagon.

Back in West Wymcombe, above the caves on top of the hill, Dashwood constructed his mausoleum... in the shape of a hexagon.

This is a Christian faith reference, one that was reimagined by 16th century author Rabelais who described a monastey like no other - the Abbey of Theleme - where only the most highbrow beautiful men & women could enter.

Their one rule? Do whatever you want!

They probably did something similar at Medmenham Abbey, a reconstructed house built with faux monastic ruins and the text you see on my handmade card - the French phrase "fay ce que voudras" which means"do as thou wilt".
November 21, 2025 at 5:04 PM
The cave entrance mimics a faux monastery but descends a quarter of a mile through twisting & geometric chambers, meant to excite and confuse private visitors.

Here it is likely they dressed up as monks and invited hired ladies dressed at nuns for adult parties, hidden from public view.

Dashwood built a fancy mansion in West Wycombe full of classical high-brow references; he and his friends dressed up for Greek god-style masquerade parties.

On the nearby hillside he created the mysterious Hellfire Caves.

Dashwood and his friends commissioned expensive paintings of themselves in monkish garb, but subverted the images.

In one, Dashwood's saint kneels praying before an altar with a book of erotica (rather than a bible).

It wouldn't be considered blasphemy exactly as it was targeted at Catholics.

This particular group were pretty much the richest men in the land and could whatever they wanted.

Dashwood liked the show off and mock his namesake, St Francis of Assisi. Mocking Catholics was a past time of badly behaved English aristocrats.

It’s never not heart breaking 😭

Oooo would love to see it in person too. I remember the excitement when it was discovered and I saw it on a magazine cover. It’s such a compelling artefact.

Lots of interpretations suggest that this disc was a ritual item - it likely depicts the sky including the Pleiades constellation.
