Will the past century or so of societies trying to give themselves rules to hold the powerful in check be a mere blib within the long history of power being based on violence?

And once things like human rights and freedom of speech, that were unheard of for most of human history, have disappeared, will they come back?

Will it survive anywhere in a world where a growing list of existential threats like climate change and its tipping points, crossing planetary boundaries, the end of fossil fuels, ai etc. will make a growing number of people look for (seemingly) easy solutions offered by populists?
