I'd recommend buying used/vintage if possible (metal vs plastic parts, minimal-to-no computer parts) - local sewing/quilt shops may have repaired models to sell. I'm partial to Singer - true vintage models great, also love my y2k-era Singer Simple. Read the manual of whatever you buy.
