I wonder if it's because it's a different sort of careerist politician. Before Major, politicians had to spend at least 20 years in Parliament before being PM. This meant they made mistakes, learnt the ropes and built a loyal base of support in their party that they could rely on in difficult (1/2)

He's saying he shouldn't be in his job. He's either lying (likely) or he truly doesn't know. A good boss will at least have some idea why there's consumer resistance to their products.

will give politicians a fair go regarding certain promises if circumstances radically change. But, for example, the Lib Dems tuition fees promise was seen as an outright lie, because they promised to vote against any increase in tuition fees whether they were in government or not.

I think there's been a gradual erosion of standards. One of the reasons why many politicians speak the way they do is historically they've tried not to outright lie. Obfuscate, mislead and try to give the wrong impression, yes, but not to lie. It's admittedly a thin line. I think most people (1/2)

Yes, I think one of the problems was that New Labour accepted the general political atmosphere it was in and made few attempts to change it. (Looking in hindsight, given the lack of scruples and ethics of the media that have since been exposed by the phone hacking scandal perhaps they were right)
