Watched Didi tonight. A really good film, but like many films about teens it's really anxiety-inducing to watch cause teens are so emotionally erratic. You're really rooting for him but he remains unable to make better decisions. The movie is VERY relatable.

There is very rarely money in trying to make something that matters to you. But there is a lot of money in making things that are just good enough to get people to buy them. That's how we end up with Marvel movies, infinite remakes, one thousand books about fucking vampires, and bad paintings reselling for millions of dollars. If you're willing to compromise everything—to have no public morals or beliefs, to make your work palatable to everyone—there is so, so much money to be made. Of course, that compromise is going to be the version of art that corporations want made. An artist is supposed to fight against that, to try to make something good even if it doesn't make them a billion dollars. Greed will always destroy good work, because money and art have drastically different priorities. On The Life of a Showgirl, it's undeniable which path Taylor Swift has decided to value more.

Watched I Don't Understand You today and found it to be one of the most amoral movies I've seen in ages. Two irredeemable characters who made terrible decisions, received no consequences, and in the end got to be parents. And their family friend is left to take the fall. This is a comedy? Bleh.

😍 i saw Juice Newton at a county fair in 2002, and I almost died cause she was my favorite as a kid. One of my first albums. My mom had Crystal Gale albums, and I loved her so muc too.. She looked like a princess with her long, long black hair.

The organisation’s true agenda is, I believe, best described as ‘eliminationist’: seeking through legislative bans, data policies, and the curtailing of gender-affirming care to relegate trans people in life and law to their sex at birth and make transitioning so difficult, dangerous or pointless as to functionally eliminate trans people from public life and society. When you understand this, you understand that ‘both sides’ of the trans debate is not trans people fighting for extra rights at the expense of others’. More and more, it is trans people fighting tooth and nail against well-funded, well-connected extremists, whose true agenda strikes at the heart of their dignity, rights and very existence.

FWIW, saying you will defend to the death a person's right to say things you disagree with involves more than a strongly worded message on Bluesky. I get it, though; it's gratifying to feel like a hero, especially when it involves literally nothing from you more than 15 seconds worth of typing.

💯 We keep waiting for the "law" to save us, but it is only a tool that can be ignored or overturned by power and force. There is no judge in shining armor en route to defeat fascism and corruption. Dem leaders seem intent on hoping and praying our destroyed system will win out, we must fight back.
People expect or hope for the law to restrain Trump and his regime’s use of violence. People keep waiting for Trump to clearly and unambiguously “break” the law, as if doing so will trigger some kind of failsafe protocol causing the statute of Abraham Lincoln to self-animate out of its chair like a democracy-defending golem. But (as I have written many, many times) the law simply doesn’t work like that. The law is not an objective set of rules that snap into action when they are violated. Instead, the law is an argument. It can be bent, stretched, or straight up ignored by the side that wins power. Every authoritarian ruler throughout history, from Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix to Vladimir Putin, has had an argument for why their actions are “legal.” I can scream till my vocal cords snap that the government’s actions are illegal, but successful dictators make their actions “legal” through iron-fisted control of both the courts and whatever ineffectual legislatures they allow to exist. Trump is no different. He’s got an argument for why he can abduct a man from his apartment in New York and send him to a for-profit concentration camp in Louisiana. He’s got an argument for why he can revoke the green card of an activist for exercising his free speech rights. He’s got an argument for why he can deport people who oppose genocide as long as they’re nonwhite.
