Ex Notts, ex S.Yorks, now Worcs birder and Military History buff, who can be insufferably opinionated about Waterloo. Once a half-hearted twitcher, now a confirmed local patch birder (Leopard Hill, Worcester). When not working on WWT reserves, that is.
Sometimes birds just make you feel so privileged to watch them. This Green Woodpecker spent over 20mins feeding in front of Avocet hide on The Flashes #uptonwarren, to the delight of half a dozen admiring spectators. #worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social

Juv Common Gull on The Moors, #uptonwarren briefly at lunchtime. @worcswt.bsky.social #worcsbirds

For the 2 hours I was there yesterday afternoon, it spent the whole time preening. It must have really wanted to look it's best ☺️

It certainly seems to have features of both alba and Yarrellii. Flanks look very white. Fascinating nonetheless.

A quite striking Wag on the Flashes ##uptonwarren today. Little egret, 5 Curlew and a kingfisher best of the few rest. ##worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social

Got good views (shame my camera didn't though) of an adult and juv water rail on The Moors #uptonwarren this afternoon. I think these are my first ever non-winter water rails. #worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social

5 Curlew, including the ringed 6N/N9 (can never remember which it is) on The Flashes #uptonwarren. Lesser Whitethroat behind Avocet hide in the Hawthrorn. Just watch out as you go over the bridge at Hen Brook, I've alerted maintainance. @worcswt.bsky.social

By focusing on the odd Lesser black-back, I forgot this, which is prob not a Juv Med Gull, though im sure it is. blooming gulls!! #uptonwarren

This is why I hate the herring/lesser B B family lol. I've been told it's a LBB gull hybrid and not the Caspian I was trying to convince myself it was, but look at those legs, forehead shape and dark eye. 🤔🙄. @worcswt.bsky.social #uptonwarren flashes.

I spent time with fingers crossed, standing and staring at all the Oaks on Leopard Hill, Worcester and finally a purple hairstreak appeared. Another first for the patch, butterfly wise. @worcswt.bsky.social @bc-westmids.bsky.social

Had a good look around my Leopard Hill patch for the more easily overlooked butterflies. Was rewarded with Small Copper and a 1st for the patch Brown Argus. 10 species in total. @worcswt.bsky.social

Sooo many butterflies across Leopard Hill, Worcester today. Had a look at as many Small Skipper as I could and found 1 Essex. A freshly emerged Gatekeeper and a pristine Painted Lady just another 2 of the highlights. @worcswt.bsky.social

I spent a nice hour watching emperors egg laying in the pond and marbled whites and small skippers flitting around the long grass on my Worcester patch this lunchtime. @worcswt.bsky.social

I do like it when male Stonechat look so different, it makes it easier to prove adjoining territories and I can then say the Juv was born on Rifle Range, not Dropping Well Farm. (Birdtracked) @worcswt.bsky.social ##worcsbirds

Smashing to see the sanderling at #uptonwarren Flashes, even if the heat haze and distance and my old shaky hands meant the P1000 struggled. #worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social

I hear lesser Whitethroat singing on Leopard Hill every Spring, but don't often see breeding evidence. Today I had good views of one with food for hungry mouths.

Leopard Hill, Worcester. 1st whitethroat on the patch this year, plenty of song flights. Willow warbler singing (always get the odd one passing though). 4 singing blackcaps and 1 female. 5 chiffchaff singing. I know at least 2 are nest building. #worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social

So happy to see common tern, 3 little gull, and the Ring-necked at the Moors today. I love the 2nd photo which contrasts the tuftie's and ring-neck's head shape, bill pattern and eye colour. B.cap and W.warb on North Moors. Dunlin on the Flashes. #uptonwarren @worcswt.bsky.social

Blackcaps have arrived in force on my Leopard Hill, Worcester patch, 5 singing this morning. Also 5 chiffchaff, 2 male bullfinch and plenty of other bird activity. Blackthorn is also suddenly in bloom. @worcswt.bsky.social #worcsbirds #birds #ukbirds #spring #birdwatching

Stonechat traffic across the Devil's Spittleful reserve cluster. The wintering pr on Dropping Well Farm, with the breeding plumaged Male, have gone and 2 new pairs have arrived. Over on Rifle Range reserve, a further pair and a territorial breeding plumaged Male. @worcswt.bsky.social #worcsbirds

Quiet on Leopard Hill, Worcester this lunchtime. NFY Red kite going south, male G.S.woodpecker, 4 Chaffinch, a male Greenfinch and a Ladybird out for a stroll, the best. #worcsbirds
February 14, 2025 at 4:16 PM
5 Curlew, 1 O.Catcher, K.fisher and a Water Rail on Hen Brook - the best of The Flashes. On the Moors, I eventually reached 25 Snipe, very active and showing really well in front of Lapwing hide (never seen one swimming before), as was a Water Rail. #uptonwarren #worcsbirds @worcswt.bsky.social
