i eventually rediscovered css aspect ratio support, which worked on the first try. the fix for both rss and browser views used half as much code as the default template. i set a margin on the wrapper div, and "aspect-ratio: 16/9; height: auto; width: 100%;" on the iframe. much simpler.

my initial change was to simply remove the "padding-bottom" attribute entirely, which fixed the rss reader view.

i applied the change, but neglected to re-check the browser view: the "fix" collapsed all youtube embeds on the blog for over a week, until yesterday.

unfortunately, that method of setting the ratio breaks the view in rss readers. the bottom padding becomes an empty gap as tall as the video itself, as seen in NetNewsWire (@netnewswire.com).
