From @rujutavaidya.bsky.social some categories of genes respond to heat stress through differential expression while others respond through differential exon usage. Only a small fraction do both. We miss an important part of the story when we focus only on DEGs! #Evo2025 #Evo25

My shirt today, in honor of the NPS Stonewall name change. On this Valentine’s Day I will not forget that I owe my right to be with a person I love to the trans women who started the uprising.

One of the stories I will tell:

I have maintained these experimental lines of live animals continuously for 10 years.

They help us to understand the impacts of climate change in the ocean.

They cannot survive for 90 days without care.

A pause doesn't mean losing 90 days.

It means 10 years.

Please help spread the word! I got to participate in an earlier version of this workshop - Melissa does a fantastic job introducing these skills to new users.

In contrast to the 'kids these days' grousing, I am often blown away by the # of students who are so much more diligent than I was in college. Eg, 30min after receiving the syllabus on the last Fri of break, 11 have already read it in sufficient detail to discover an Easter Egg, buried deep on p3.

Next up: @ecophysiology.bsky.social on the wind niche: organismal responses to wind speed, convection, and boundary layers #SICB2025

First up in our symposium, Mechanisms of phenotypic responses to environmental change: @lbuckley.bsky.social on some impressive functional resurveys in butterflies: 50 years of data(!) show shifts it thermal performance curves and plasticity. #SICB2025

Super engaging talk from @danielgeldof.bsky.social (Lab of @prosanta.bsky.social at @lsuscience.bsky.social): Beautiful images (and an awesome metaphor) to explore the question: Why does my fish have hole in it's head? #SICB2025 Go ask him about his fish if you want to know the answer!

I love hearing talks by @clattin.bsky.social from @lsuscience.bsky.social because they are always a masterclass in #SciComm. Careful experimental work shows it is baseline, not stress-induced corticosterone that matters for neophobia. #SICB2025

Very cool and remarkably integrative(!) work from @cam-g.bsky.social and @evoecoalex.bsky.social showing overlapping biological pathways mediate trade off between salinity tolerance and aggression, explaining how abiotic and biotic factors interact to set range limits in Trinidad guppies #SICB2025

I've been thinking a lot about this, and what it means to micro-dose on hope. I see a lot of folks doing this here, with beautiful nature photos and cool new papers, and I think that's why I'm finding this community so valuable. So today I want to share our micro-doses. I'll start:

My lab group is the best for many reasons. Today one of those reasons is that they showed up at 4pm on a Thursday afternoon to help my kiddo practice his elevator pitch for his science fair tomorrow 🧪🔬❤️

Mark Yeats gives his thesis talk at 1:30 CST tomorrow!

Know whence you came: Acclimatization potential and signatures of parental environments on larval gene expression in the Olympia Oyster, Ostrea lurida.

DM us if you’d like a zoom link.

My kiddo needs to do a science fair project, so I have some free labor collecting prelim data for the next proposal I want to write.

This dude is ruined for all future molecular bio though- no one’s PCR should work this well the first time they touch a pipette!

So proud to watch these @evo_lagniappe scholars engaging with the @SACNAS community. I don’t think they’ve stopped networking since they stepped off the plane! #ramp #NSFfunded #NDiSTEM2023

Hi everyone! I'm Morgan. I'm an Associate Professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. I study the evolution of stress tolerance traits in marine invertebrates and try to understand how species adapt to changing environments.

Went to see the Queen with @tropicalbotany.bsky.social last night! I am now *extremely* sleepy at my desk, but also remembering the importance of cultivating this kind of joy.
