It’s a math term lol. Egan is very much hard scifi and can go pretty hard with the technical stuff. Both the stories I mentioned should be perfectly comprehensible even if you don’t have a STEM background but some of his stuff, less so. Tried a novel of his in high school, couldn’t handle the math

If you read and enjoy it I would highly highly recommend his short story Wang’s Carpets. Absolutely blew my mind when I was like 14. Also the first time I encountered the word “eigenvalue” lol

I think having an AI avi is more trouble than it’s worth in terms of making people mad for a dumb reason

Have you read the Greg Egan novella “Perihelion Summer?” About a bunch of nerds governing a climate refugee nomadic boat fleet. Not his best work but short and interesting
