I just finished Written on the Dark by @guygavrielkay.bsky.social which broke my heart into tiny little pieces, and for a change of pace I’m now devouring The Children of Eve, the latest supernatural thriller from John Connolly.

@emmanewman.bsky.social’s latest blew me away. Can’t wait for the next instalment. In the meantime, I’m off to reread Dumas.

Book 22: @badancient.bsky.social delightful collection of snapshots of liminal places (from a classical civ POV) in the ancient world illustrating that the “edges” had rich, vibrant cultures that were often more intellectually curious and always more culturally flexible than the so-called centre.

My local park has goats. I love goats. These little dudes are incentive to go out for a walk when I Do Not Want but will probably wreck my times if I run that route.

This time last year I was training for a half marathon. Since then I’ve been a mess of illness and injury. Today is the first time in many months I’ve covered 5 km (didn’t even try to run it all) but even so, for me this is a half decent pace.

On that note, I recently enjoyed the hell out of these two books by @julietemckenna.bsky.social and @tkingfisher.com. For slightly more detail see my Instagram (same username).

Book 11. I do love me some Icelandic detective fiction. There’s nothing that special about this but I burned through it in 2 days.

Book no 7. I’d been chipping away at this for months. Long but still feels like a summary.

Book 5 of 2025. Love me a weird western with engaging world building. (You can take the girl out of the prairie etc). Queer and trans AF too.

Book 4 of 2025. Best impulse buy in a long time - couldn’t put it down and it will be in my head for a while.

2nd book of 2025. How can anyone know any of this and still think the Raj was a good (or even neutral) thing?
Also the women involved with revolutionaries being left abandoned and literally holding the baby seems to be a universal truth.

First book of 2025 done - this is an excellent trilogy and I must not go down a Russian history/folklore rabbit hole. I have some background knowledge but I always want to know more.

My Xmas book haul. I’ve not read The Mabinogion since my undergrad days and the old Penguin translation isn’t great. I’d no idea the Enriquez was so big till I opened it!
