1/15 Four years of Intrepid Editions. Most people know me for my 1/1s (over 120 collected), but I’ve also released a few editions over the years. Let’s dig in👇

When the shallows end, and the blue turns black, there’s a kind of truth waiting. Not in signal, but in silence.
Because the edge isn’t where the world stops.

It’s where you start.

4/7 To pull off this shot the approach also needed to align perfectly with Mount Assiniboine during darkness, along with being in the right season for the Milky Way. This conjunction of events (before considering terrestrial weather) is unlikely to happen again in my lifetime.

3/7 As Mars is on a different orbital ellipse to earth close approaches vary. During 2018's approach Mars was a mere ~1/30th of the distance from earth compared to its furthest orbit.

2/7 Astrological alignments have a way of making us feel insignificant. During 2018, Mars was on what is called a "close approach". The next close approach where Mars will appear this large will not be until 2035.

9/20 The photos were featured at an physical exhibition called Himalayan Awakening. This kickstarted my career with "the clouds have rocks in them" becoming symbolic with the brand intrepidphotos.com that I had registered in 2001.

8/20 Ama Dablam means "Mother's necklace"; the long ridges on each side are like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier thought of as the dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods, worn by Sherpa women.

7/20 'The Clouds Have Rocks in Them' was shot on Fuju Velvia and named after the old Nepalese pilots adage that “we don't fly when there are clouds, because the clouds have rocks in them”. Taken after climbing to 5,559 metres (18,238 ft); the spire rises to 6,812m (22,349ft).

6/20 The expedition was shot on slide film. Digital cameras at the time were low quality and resolution. Early battery technology had issues with severe cold and with no recharging it was too heavy to carry batteries anyway. There was no ability to review any work in the field.
