We also talk a bit about the construction of crime, stats, etc. in our 2021 resource Cops Don’t Stop Violence—still very relevant!

Crime means different things to different people—for some, it means something or someone(s) considered a nuisance or “suspicious” i.e. existing while Black or unhoused.
“Crime also means different things to different people. For some it means everything that is technically against the law. For others it means harm or violence. And for people calling the police, "crime" can simply be something or someone they consider a nuisance or bothersome, like the presence of a "suspicious person," or someone barbequing in a park or selling lemonade on the street, which may not technically be illegal. Ultimately, what is deemed a crime is more about criminalizing specific populations of people rather than specific acts — so even when something is criminalized, it is not universally enforced. So while jaywalking is technically a crime, it tends to be used as a pretext to stop, harass, ticket and arrest people of color the cops are already criminalizing. Same goes for riding a bike on the sidewalk, celebrating a sports victory, getting into a fight at school, or using cocaine. Same goes for killing someone in self-defense — some people are arrested and criminalized for it, others, including cops who consistently claim self-defense regardless of the circumstances, are celebrated for it.”

"This discussion-centered course uncovers an emerging control matrix grounded in colonial capitalism, hierarchy, and an evolving U.S. penal system that produces systematic exclusion. We will investigate how our people's life energy has been siphoned throughout history and continues to be diverted into extractive structures by operation of white supremacy, patriarchy, and violence. Together we will explore ways to move beyond separation and extraction through human rights–centered cooperative communal development that can lead to expanding self-determined, sustaining infrastructure in Black, brown, and working-class communities."
