I know the “tech elite” is famously disinterested in learning anything about the history or nature of the world around them, but I’m still a bit staggered they would try to claim “AI” presents some sort of unique ethical quandary requiring special allowances because firms pay better than government.

surprisingly apt metaphor given that the original California gold rush was an environmental catastrophe in which many people were immiserated to enrich a small number of nouveau elites who happened to be well positioned within a supply chain dedicated to producing a product with little actual value.

Seems obvious that whatever “influence” he was allegedly driving under had a lot more to do with this crash than whether he entered the country with papers. Of course, this @ocregister.bsky.social barely even mentions the DUI part while breathlessly parroting DHS’s claims about immigration status.

1) the quote is a mischaracterization — Klein asks about the generic ballot, which has “soured” but not “collapsed” as one might expect from GOP deliberately and loudly increasing costs after a cost of living election.

2) 41% is around his first term mark so worth pondering why no no collapse yet.

Everywhere I look I see reflections of Corey Robin’s description of Scalia-ism: not simply indifferent to suffering, but reverent, practically libidinal towards it.

1984: arguably the last genuine landslide, mandate-granting presidential election perhaps ever. Reagan infinitely vindicated, Walter Mondale consigned to be a pathetic punchline symbolizing pre-Clinton Democratic haplessness. Mondale still got more than 40% of the popular vote.

I’ll reserve judgment until the full report is out (municipal power is great!) but this doesn’t make sense to me. There’s no power without the transmission lines. Is the idea that the new utility would pay SDG&E for transmission capacity only? That’s still going to cost a lot of money!

We cannot solve the housing crisis with Los Angeles rowing the opposite direction. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social must tell @mayor.lacity.gov to pound sand and sign SB 79 as soon as possible.

Beyond the laughable claim that this white Mormon felt unsafe expressing his Christian beliefs in PROVO of all places, his public LinkedIn clearly states he is studying for his BS at UVU (which does not have a medical school).

Too bad @nytimes.com doesn’t employ fact checkers equipped with google!

As discussed — a coward and a (once and future) loser

Valadao likely ends up caving because he is a coward and a loser, but also worth noting that his district has about 4x the SNAP participation rate as the rest of California (which is already a relatively high participation state).

Left side: “increasing state capacity”
Right side: “complaining about insufficient state capacity”

Ned please make them stop parroting demonstrably fake news

Simply not true and contradicted by all high quality research. It’s housing costs, not the “temperate climate” (would we really characterize Bakersfield, Truckee, and Eureka as “temperate”?). @nytimes.com should correct.

This article is deeply dishonest. You should be ashamed of how badly this article frames the actual stakes of forcing renters to pay electric bills for millionaire homeowners. Bonus points for smuggling in a quote by a “Solar Rights Alliance” board member as if she is a random member of the public.
