Let our Bluesky journey begins! 🌳🦋

Let's introduce the #INTEGRADIV project! We focus on the conservation of #MediterraneanForests and their diversity, by studying spatial patterns of diversity, their drivers, and including of stakeholders in a prioritisation plan 🎯

New output from our @biodiversa.eu project!

Do you remember all those field trips to sample trees? You can find the results here! An updated Woodiv database:

210 species🌲occurreces at a 10 km res in the Euro-Mediterranean Basin. 17 functional traits and a time-calibrated phylogeny. 👌

Our new data paper on the WOODIV database version 2 is now out in Scientific Data: "𝑾𝑶𝑶𝑫𝑰𝑽 𝒗2, 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒄𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔, 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆-𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐-𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒔" 🌳

Today on #WeeklyIntegradivSp we meet 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘴, the European roe deer 🦌

Found across much of Europe, this species is well-adapted to diverse habitats, but because it lives in small home ranges and depends on vegetation for cover and forage, habitat alteration can affect them strongly

Today on #WeeklyIntegradivSp we meet 𝘗𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢, the Italian wall lizard 🦎

Found in Italy and the surrounding area. This species is highly variable, with up to 52 different subspecies. It is also present in islands, where individuals are smaller and have less sexually dimorphic body sizes

Today on #WeeklyIntegradivSp we meet 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 (“red squirrel”) 🐿️

In certain regions, red squirrels are threatened by the introduction of 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴, which competes for food and may carry diseases (such as squirrelpox) that the native red squirrels are vulnerable to.

Today for #WeeklyIntegradivSp let's meet the endangered species 𝘊𝘺𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴! This species is one of the few legumes growing as a tree in the Mediterranean. The only place in the world where it is found is the Stromboli volcano where it forms forests in the middle of the sea!!
October 15, 2025 at 9:13 AM
Today on #WeeklyIntegradivSp we meet the Balkan Marbled White (Melanargia larissa)! It inhabits dry grasslands, rocky slopes & open woods, is localized & sensitive to habitat loss 🎯
“Larissa” may refer to a Greek nymph: fitting for a butterfly gracing sunlit hillsides with elegance 🦋

The #WeeklyIntegradivSp list continues with one of the largest woodpecker species in the world, the black woodpecker (𝘋𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘶𝘴). These birds love to make their presence felt, as they are very noisy, and their drumming sound can be heard from up to 4 kilometers away!

Today in #WeeklyIntegradivSp let's meet 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴! The downy oak has the particularity to emit huge amounts of isoprene, a volatile organic compound influencing the chemical compoistion of the atmosphere, in turn impacting air quality and regional climate!

New on European conservation science:

Survey shows that Mediterranean stakeholders agree on priorities: regulating ecosystem services, taxonomic diversity & nature’s value. Building on this consensus can boost conservation action.

Took a wonderful, sunny walk at Cerro de Hierro, located within the Sierra Morena Natural Park and surrounded by a well-preserved Mediterranean forest. What a great way to end such an intense conference! #ConserBio2025

At #ConserBio2025, @hernandezaguero.com presented some preliminary results of the prioritisation of Mediterranean forests, taking into account the stakeholders preferences and biodiversity facets.

He also posed an open question to the audience regarding the next steps in conservation.

During the #ConserBio2025, Elysa Silva (@elywok.bsky.social) explained how she identified key species for functional diversity in Euro-Mediterranean forest tree assemblages.

It's surprising how some species greatly contribute to the total evenness of the community!

Integradiv is present at the VII #ConserBio conference in Seville.

By participating in the association fair, we can disseminate our results and receive feedback from key stakeholders in Mediterranean conservation.

We will be waiting for your questions at @hernandezaguero.com & @elywok.bsky.social

Today on #WeeklyIntegradivSp we meet the Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi), easily recognized by its vivid green underwings.

Its green color is not due to pigment but to tiny wing structures that scatter light - a rare example of structural green in nature!
