It was created by those who seek to make universities profitable. Universities should be run as a common good. Instead the movement to defund public colleges and universities that began in the ‘80s starved them and set us on this path. Private institutions, seeing public tuition rise followed suit.

Instead, we must acknowledge the decisions of financier trustees and highly paid admins with budget control have created a financial nightmare not unlike a housing bubble. This is a monstrous lodestone created, not by academics or a knowledge-focused autonomous university.

Students, their, parents, and even their grandparents are paying to service loans the university took on. Claiming the university culture is the problem repeats the finger pointing at political correctness of the ‘80s.

I have heard this trope from other higher education leaders. Classic misdirection. Highly paid leadership and financier trustees at universities jumped on the real estate / debt based model for expansion. Now paying that debt requires getting more students paying ever higher tuition.
