Have you heard of 18XX games? They're a stock-market / train company management boardgame series. And you can play them online for free. Pretty good candidate for slow asynchronous play, as some of them can take 8 hours or more of play time.

Have you played Ultima 7? If you're curious about it, you can play at higher resolutions, with some of the coveniences of U7 Part II (a keyring!) if you utilize Exult. This fan project has re-built the game for modern systems, and works really well.

The Boot Disk Games name is a reference to this little arcane process, the ritual that would unlock access to some good old fashioned PC gaming.

Small brick units in my working class suburb in Perth are now selling for nearly a million dollars (Australian). Over 10 x the median pretax yearly income. This is fine and normal.

Days of Heaven. It's a confined little tragedy that is shot like a David Lean epic. Malick shot so many scenes at times of day when the light was perfect, but surely required multiple attempts spanning ages in real life. Stupidly good looking.

Finally getting around to watching this brillaint talk by @jon.inkle.co where he expounds upon the value of banter for making game narratives richer / more replayable.

As it happens Innkeep is practically entirely about NPC banter (and stealing things).

Hot Fuzz. Endlessly entertaining. Films that are outward homages to other genres and styles can often feel lazy. But there's nothing lazy about this film.

"Joyce Cooper: Fascist!
Nicholas Angel: I beg your pardon?
Cooper: System of government categorized by extreme dictatorship. Seven across."

Love the idea of “Agent Scully’s Exasperation” as a menace stat.

Lawrence of Arabia. Another David Lean masterpiece. Perfect compositions. Jaw dropping shot after jaw dropping shot. It's no surprise that Denis Villeneuve was heavily inspired by Lawrence of Arabia.

Arsenic and Old Lace.

Where Grant discovers his lovely old aunts are murderers. It's an adaptation of a Broadway play, and has that spaciality with the way the action all takes place around a single set to great effect. Reminds me of good Frasier episodes in that way.
