Cover of The Book of Guilt by Catherine Chidgey is held up in front of a bookcase England, 1979. Vincent, Lawrence and William are the last remaining residents of a secluded New Forest home, part of the government's Sycamore Scheme. Every day, the triplets do their chores, play their games and take their medicine, under the watchful eyes of three mothers: Mother Morning, Mother Afternoon and Mother Night.

Their nightmares are recorded in The Book of Dreams.
Their lessons are taken from The Book of Knowledge.
And their sins are reported in The Book of Guilt.

All the boys want is to be sent to the Big House in Margate, where they imagine a life of sun, sea and fairground rides. But, as the government looks to shut down the Sycamore Homes, the triplets begin to question everything they have been told. What did I think? I absolutely loved this book. It’s one of the best books I’ve read this year and I can’t recommend it highly enough! It’s exquisitely written, compelling, shocking, heart-breaking, and just bloody brilliant! It’s clear from the start of the book that the boys are different, and that the people in their local town are wary of them. This felt like such a powerful way to explore how people who are perceived to be different are often treated in the world - reduced to generalisations and misconceptions, often judged on the actions of just one person in their community, and held to a higher standard than those who fear them. The book does an excellent job of holding a mirror up to what society as a whole often allows to happen, as long as it’s happening to someone you see as other, or less than you. The Book of Guilt has earned comparisons to Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - another one of my favourite books, and rightly so in my opinion. Not only because there’s a similarity in the themes in both books but because the writing is spectacular and it really makes you feel something. I know this is going to be a book I’ll be recommending to everyone so please, do yourself a favour and buy it now!

DCS Kat Frank and her AI partner, Detective Lock, find themselves working on a new murder investigation when a dismembered body is found at a local fishing spot. Using Kat's unmatched detective skills and Lock's advanced data analysis they are able to quickly identify the victim. However, the discovery of another body nearby stirs up rumors about Kat's past case involving The Aston Strangler. Was the right man convicted, or is an innocent person behind bars? I absolutely loved this book, and the series as a whole - it's one of the best I've ever read. If you're a fan of crime fiction then you will love it too as it's a great murder mystery, but it's really so much more than that, and I think this book would appeal to everyone. The inclusion of an AI detective provides a unique take on the police procedural novel and explores the realities of technology integrating with humanity in a way we don't yet truly understand. As Lock becomes more intelligent he begins to question who he is, and he even starts to think it's about time he had a body - but what will he have to do to get one? Ultimately this book, and the whole series, explores what it means to be human. It tackles some really big themes around grief, parenting, identity, loneliness, prejudice, and trauma in a way that really makes you stop and think. The characters are what really make this book for me, each of them are relatable, flawed, and oh so real. Human Remains is Book 3 in the series and it's honestly the best one yet! I really didn't know if it could live up to the ending of Book 2 but it genuinely surpasses it! While all of the books can be read as standalones I'd recommend reading them in order to get the best possible reading experience.
