Motives are all over the place. I think it might just boil down to how long they can remain out of criminal probes and proceedings. A lot of them see the writing on the wall, but the mechanisms that kept them in power are eroding below them and they're bound to make worse decisions out of fear.

Competence doesn't mean they still won't try. You see his incompetent people at the DOJ trying to play around with the judiciary. They might not be good at it, but I don't think that means they won't keep grasping at straws.

True, but desperation makes people do some crazy things. We might see some modern form of that is all.

Trump has no successor and nobody in his inner circle comes even close to mimicking the charisma that his base loves.

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to Weekend and Bernie's him because once he's gone the entire GOP will break into factionalism. Their politics are cannibalistic by nature.
