Most people running for vacant Cook County judicial positions are currently attorneys. Others are already judges after they were appointed to temporarily fill a vacancy, but need to be elected to make their position permanent.

These candidates are vying for 27 circuit court vacancies and one open position in the appellate court. Vacancies are created any time a judge retires, resigns, dies, or is not retained during the prior general election (which happened last fall). buff.ly/sYLRig1

Prosecutors can’t appeal a “not guilty” verdict, and can only appeal things like evidence suppression in few circumstances. So it's unlikely in this case.

Good Q. Reversals can happen when a ruling is appealed. However, because the Fifth Amendment protects people from being tried twice for the same offense, most appeals are initiated by defendants, not prosecutors.
