Elacatinus phthirophagus is a sister species of E. randalli and is endemic from Brazil. Many species from Brazil also occur in the SE Caribbean - which is actually the rationale behind one of my PhD chapters 🐠🧬

I actually photographed one during my fieldwork trip in Belize 2023. Not the nicest photo but it was amazing being able to spot such a beautiful and endangered fish!

Such a fun evening with the 2nd CABRA lab cookie competition 🍪and of course @chemingson.bsky.social won as the most decorative! Who wants to guess which fish species he’s representing? 🐠🤣

1st CABRA Lab CryptoVison Fish-ID contest it was definitely one of the best lab meetings of the semester 🐠🐠🐠

Just had a wonderful week in Mexico with the Risor ruber team for our writing (and fun) retreat! It’s been amazing to learn and work with y’all! So excited to what’s to come! #gobyteam 🐠🧬 @TheresaRueger @jordancasey.bsky.social @gobyone.bsky.social

Starting the week with great news! I'm so happy to have been awarded the 2024 @ICRSCoralReefs Graduate Fellowship to conduct part of my doctoral research exploring the connectivity between Brazilian and Caribbean reef fishes! 🐠🧬

Thrilled to share my PhD preliminary findings at the 52nd Benthic Ecology Meeting! I’m so excited to continue unveiling the world of this little cryptobenthic fish! Stay tuned for updates on their pop gen, microbiome and ecological specialization 🧬🐠 #BEM2024

5/8 We also found bony fish in trade, alongside other mislabeled samples. Mislabeling, including the generic umbrela-labels (i.e. "cação") obscures species identification, hamper consumer trust and conservation efforts. Standardized labeling is vital for accurate trade regulation.

2/8 We observed a geographical bias along the Brazilian coast, showing a higher concentration of studies in the Southeast, North and South regions, with very few studies on the Northeast region. This highlights the need to distribute resources and research efforts equitably.

🧬🦈🌊 New study reveals the urgency of regulating the trade of sharks and rays in Brazil. A Meta-Analysis of all studies using DNA based methods to track trade of elasmobranchs identified 64 species being commercialized, being 83% threatened ones (IUCN). Check the key highlights:

So happy to have been awarded the Clark Hubbs Scholarship from @TCAFS for my eDNA/eRNA chapter on the southern flounder! 🧬 And even happier to celebrate this feeling with @scubamelman.bsky.social - which is doing an incredible work on Texas blennies 🐠

It’s been a very intense week of coding around here in the RADseq Physalia course 🧠🔥 Can’t wait to analyze my own data 🧬

Had such a great day today working at our local elementary school for the Science in Residence program from @UTMSI! It was really fun to teach young minds (4th and 5th grades) about the importance of DNA tools for marine conservation! 🦈🧬

Wrapping up my last day in Newcastle with this beautiful result of an intense week of work! The first ddRAD library pool of our little goby samples is ready for sequencing! 🧬🐠 I can't express how relieved I am...

Doing a PhD is such a comic (and bipolar) process… One day, you’re praying for it to end, and the next you’re taking a photo like that to register success in 1/5 steps of your lab protocol 😂 #phdlife

Hi! I’m Ingrid! I’m a PhD student at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute based in Port Aransas, Texas. I study levels of diversity within coral reef and coastal fish communities using a broad set of molecular tools, including eDNA, eRNA, pop genomics, and microbiome! 🧬🐠🦠

The first post here couldn't be more exciting... My first PhD paper is out in Environmental DNA! 🧬💧

It provides an accessible way to visualize methodological aspects and understand the current applications of eDNA/eRNA in community ecology!
