At dinner on Friday, someone asked why I became a medievalist. My answer, as always, was Marcia Colish. She taught a first-year seminar on the Crusades. I gave a presentation; she gave me an F. As a teacher, she terrified with passionate professionalism. As a researcher and a person, she was great.
