Bennie Maupin The Jewel In The Lotus ECM, 1974 I T WAS Buster Williams’s doing. By 1970, the 28-year-old bassist had been with The Herbie Hancock Sextet for nearly two years and, like Hancock, found himself questioning the group’s purpose as they moved from elec- tric Miles funk (1969’s Fat Albert Rotunda) to experimental post-bop (1970’s The Prisoner), and endeavouring to develop a new image that ZRXOGUHÁHFWDQHZIRXQGLQWHUHVWLQ$IULFDQ culture; sporting dashikis, African talismans and going by their own Swahili names. At Williams’s insistence, drummer Billy Hart joined the band on July 31, 1970, to replace Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath. However, following the departure of saxophonist Joe Henderson, Williams and Hart thought the answer to Hancock’s artistic woes might lie in Henderson’s replacement. Both suggested Detroit-born multireedist Bennie Maupin, ZKRPWKH\·GÀUVWPHWLQ'HWURLWLQ “He was like us, a seeker,” explains Billy Hart today, in between lessons at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where the 83-year- old is Associate Professor of Jazz Percussion. “It wasn’t a hard decision. He’d played with Miles and Herbie [on 1970’s Bitches Brew] and everyone knew Bennie was on his way to being a band leader himself.” That would happen in March 1974, in New York City’s Record Plant Studio. In between, Maupin, Hart, Williams, trumpeter Eddie Henderson and trombonist Julian Priester would revolutionise early-’70s jazz with Mwandishi. BY MICHAEL POLLAN PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY DAVID SAMUEL STERN I n October, 2015, Hunt Priest, then a minister at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island, in Washing- ton State, was flipping through The Christian Century, a progressive Protes- tant magazine, when an advertisement caught his eye: “Seeking Clergy to Take Part in a Research Study of Psilocybin and Sacred Experience.” Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic compound found in cer- tain mushrooms; researchers at Johns Hopkins University and N.Y.U. wanted to administer it to religious leaders who had “an interest in further exploring and developing their spiritual lives.” Priest, a slight, bearded, and disarm- ingly open man from small-town Ken- tucky, grew up in a Protestant church- going family and felt a religious calling as a teen-ager. He went to work for Delta Air Lines, but he told me that, in his thirties, “I began to feel something was missing in my spiritual life.” He started reading Buddhist texts, including Thích Nhất Hạnh’s “Living Buddha, Living Christ,” which eventually steered him back toward Christianity. At thirty-seven, he entered seminary. By the time Priest saw the ad, he was burned out. He ministered to an afflu- ent bedroom community near Seattle and felt that his work had become “more about institutional administration and mainte- nance. That will wrench the spirituality out of most people.” He had never expe- rienced psychedelics—a requirement for participation in the study—and had heard some horror stories. The Elephant as a Symbol of Mental Strength and Steadfastness: In Buddhism, the untamed mind is sometimes compared to a wild elephant – powerful, destructive, and erratic. Through practices like meditation and mindfulness, this "elephant" of the mind can be tamed and trained. A tamed elephant is strong, reliable, and steadfast. The "Eye" of this Tamed Mind: The "eye" of such a tamed and powerful mind could then represent a clear, focused, and insightful perception. It's not about literal omniscience, but rather a profound understanding born from a controlled and cultivated mind. It sees things as they truly are (Yathābhūta ñāṇadassana – knowledge and vision of things as they are), free from the distortions of delusion, craving, and aversion. Wisdom and Insight (Prajñā): The "eye" in Buddhism often symbolizes wisdom (Prajñā) – the faculty that sees the ultimate nature of reality, including concepts like impermanence (anicca), suffering (dukkha), and non-self (anattā). The Elephant's Gaze: An elephant's calm, steady gaze could be metaphorically linked to the unwavering insight of wisdom. This "eye of the elephant" doesn't just see superficial appearances but penetrates to the deeper truths of existence. It "sees all" in the sense of comprehending the interconnectedness and fundamental nature of phenomena. Mindfulness and Awareness: A key aspect of Buddhist practice is cultivating mindfulness (sati) – a clear, non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. The Elephant's Presence: Elephants are often perceived as being very present and aware of their surroundings. The "eye of the elephant" could symbolize this all-encompassing awareness – a mind that is fully attentive to all aspects of experience, both internal and external, without being overwhelmed or distracted.

Private Eye editor Ian Hislop feels the Archbishop of Canterbury is outgoing in the wrong way. Hislop's magazine has long covered the scandal that led to Justin Welby's resignation, and he was unimpressed when the archbishop appeared at the British Museum trustees' dinner just a day after quitting. "Isn't this lovely?" said Welby to Hislop, who replied: "It is lovely that you have resigned." Hislop said this was "not the most brilliant bit of repartee", but a frank exchange of views followed and they parted on unfriendly terms. Hislop glared as others comforted the deposed primate. "These particular Christians were far too keen to forgive each other," he said, "and far too slow to seek justice." An archbishop can be dethroned but, when it comes to forgiveness, Hislop will find the CofE has an immutable company policy.

Antiviral therapies could reduce the amount of ebv circulating in patients’ immune systems. A large international study published in December found that people living with hiv, and taking antiviral drugs, were less likely to be diagnosed with ms than the general population.
