Quite right! Even when I used drawings in DMing, it was just that. It's nuts to think visual aids are required in a game about imagination. Even if you can't paint word-pictures so what? Your player's minds will fill in the blanks!

Also, if you are bad at describing things, how do you expect the slop machine to plop out the thing you can't describe?

I just finished a campaign where we didn't get a single description of NPCs past their race and whether they had demonic glowing eyes or a robot arm. It was great. The DM was great.

Whoever told you "ability to vividly describe minor NPCs" is a requirement is the gatekeeper, and also wrong.
