An “eternity” of suffering sounds like dramatic hyperbole. The more you are able to quantify something, the more “real” it feels. Bonus points if you do everything right and the all-mighty powers that be say “yeah, you’ll go to Heaven, but you still have to suffer 100 years first. Nothing we can do”

Fantasy settings where you KNOW the afterlife exists is one thing. Imagine living a righteous life, understanding what time feels like, and then learning that the super heroic thing you did as a kid has damned you to 100 years of torture in a hell. And the angels just shrug their shoulders.
