I tried the Flatpak at one point but gave up when it didn't work immediately. Now that I have actually read the error message I can see that having $GEM_PATH/$GEM_HOME set caused it to look for Ruby gems in the wrong place. Turns out it runs fine if I simply unset those environment variables! 👍

Yes, AppImage should (in theory) work, although it doesn't help much when I want to modify the code. Reproducible development environment could help there. I've had my frustrations with Nix but once it is set up it does a great job solving that problem (especially with flox.dev or devenv.sh).
