Newsom threatens to cut USC‘s state funding if they agree to Trump’s demands and “sell out their students, professors, researchers and surrender academic freedom."

If other Dems don’t step up and bully cowardly institutions to a similar level, Newsom will win the Dem primary.
The University of Southern California was the only California school among a group of nine institutions that were approached this week with the proposed deal: make changes to admissions procedures, faculty hiring, and policies around gender identity, among other demands, in order to get priority access to federal funding grants. The quid pro quo is the latest gambit in a multi-pronged scheme by the Trump administration to assert a level of control over the country's colleges, which the president sees as having become bastions of unchecked liberal thought. "Do the right thing," Newsom said. "What's the point of the system? What's the point of the university? What's the point of all of this?" In an all caps statement on Thursday, Newsom called the proposal "radical" and threatened to pull state funding immediately from schools in the state that opt to sign on. He said that California will "not bankroll schools that sell out their students, professors, researchers and surrender academic freedom."

When we spoke, Catsimatidis was vague about how all this would play out. “What’s the name of that song? ‘See You in September,’” he said. “Something will happen. Hey, God saved America.” He was referring to Trump surviving assassination attempts and winning reelection. “We saved the free world. Now we have to save New York.”

Billionaire financier Bill Ackman may be one example. After the primary, Ackman originally promised on X to fund a “charismatic, intelligent, articulate, handsome, charming, young yet more experienced” centrist as a write-in candidate. According to one person familiar with the machinations, he was referring to Congressman Ritchie Torres, who was not interested. In a comment, Torres’s director of communications said, “There is no universe in which the Congressman would ever consider a write-in campaign for Mayor,” adding that “Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic nomination fair and square.”
