Remember that sunshine melts ice. Winter solstice happens this Sunday. More sunshine is coming, and the politics of darkness cannot stop it.

Exercise brings calm. But people desperately waving in the water being killed?

Runners may want to run more. But there's frigid air and bad footing.

Despite the horror, it's time for less. Recover. Politics takes endurance. The flowers are indoors.

Crank it when there's a thaw.

Today is the anniversary of the death of creative genius Frank Zappa. He was only 52.

He knew early in life exactly what he wanted to do, and did it. He was fearless.

I feel certain where his musical and visual powers would be directed today.

A force for free speech, satirist of tyrants.

Yes, Mr Epstein's emails may open eyes that have yet to see the depravity we face each day

Meanwhile let me reveal my latest experiment since the Monumental Half last Saturday.

Straight lacing. A new old fashioned approach for unhappy feet.

It distributes lace pressure. Better running.

In addition to the daily WH horror stories, Fall is happening.

And as an elderly citizen 2.5 weeks before the Monumental Half Marathon, I officially stopped experimenting with shoes and walk/run ratios.

The die is cast.

Halloween decor recommendation if you're still thinking about it--happy smiling faces on jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches...

I love Halloween classic movies, villains with the best outfits, monsters.

But we have too many angry, snarling faces. For the holiday, for kids at the door, smiles.

How many great running events anywhere in the world, like today's Chicago Marathon, are diluted by fear that government agents will suddenly appear and cart off runners?
October 12, 2025 at 4:47 PM
What's the hardest thing to do the day before a Saturday race prep long run?

Rest.

There's nothing new to say about the worst president. Just details from the latest horror.

I want to know: What candidates do you support, why?

Meanwhile I ran a new stretch of Nickel Plate trail today. Like discovering a secret garden in the yard.

Soul food for me. Change takes strength.

The joke said there was freedom of speech in the Soviet Union, but not freedom after speech.

And we had the hunt for communists. The media of the day were mostly cowards.

Now a president follows his McCarthy persecution mentor. Media are following the old cowardice. Mostly.

Sure we don't want a king. If you feel better joining others to say that, please do. Will that produce anything else?

Maybe advance the stature of organizers or speakers. Help raise funds.

But change takes winning elections with candidates people are fired up about.

Who are they?

If you don't know how to control political rage, first go for a run. Don't take a gun.
September 11, 2025 at 11:34 AM
The AI answer to find my run/walk ratio didn't work. It said run to top of aerobic zone, walk till BPM drops 20, run.

That makes 18 minute miles. No kind of "run."

My query said I'm 82. AI's answer might work 40 years ago when I ran miles below 8, no walking.

AI revolution?
September 9, 2025 at 9:32 PM
No real guidance for runners over 80. Experts address "senior" or "older" runners. 65 to 70 to 75 to 80+ were big changes for me.

An AI search for best walk/run ratios said run to top of aerobic zone HR, walk till BPM drops 20, repeat.

Got Polaris HR10 to help my Coros Pace 2. Is AI my coach?

Please stop telling me how bad the current president is. I know.

Please stop telling me we are on the boundary of dictatorship. I follow the news.

What I want from Blueskies:

What candidates you support for what offices

Why you support them

It's time to pick the team

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Long ago advice for living in our system.

Where the First Amendment is to shield the free marketplace of ideas and copyright protects works of satire.

These powerful ideas will outlast today's kleptocracy and its firings and attacks.

A short week at the lake with no running, no weights, no stretching. What happens to fitness?

In my 40's, rest. In my 80's, rust. The lesson for me at least is diamond clear.

No matter how hard, keep up the routines in all changing scenes.

The test for the next generation charismatic Democratic leader is the same used by Justice Potter Stewart for pornography: I know it when I see it.

No prescription for the biggest issue, no 100% on check the box base covering, no flawless bio, no position paper can be elected.

Getting to a run or race can be the hardest part of a day if you're old enough.

Why? Pitstop anxiety. Walkers, bikers, families out for a stroll have it too.

Not moving is the easy answer and a road to poor health and short lives.

Public restrooms and water support the road to health. Demand them
July 19, 2025 at 6:20 PM
Running for health or from Trump, the hardest puzzle is recovery.

Runners are great at effort. Schedules are great at generalizing. Coaches are great at sharing experiences.

But none know what YOU need to recover down to your cells. It's trial and error. Every day.

The Times reports medical care is the biggest industry in most states and the US. And growing.

If physical movement was a key component of every life every day, the industry would be smaller and all lives more joyful.

Move and help others start if you want big change. No trivial vaccine fights

Amid the spewing of cruelty from the WH, get relief at a local independent running store.

I love them. Second homes. They help you run better, avoid injury, heal, find a group, hydrate, on and on.

And if you're a snail like me, they make you look good with great gear. Hit the bricks!

Decades ago I read an unforgettable line: you're as young as your spine.

I've taken it to heart but won't describe what I do. Spine specialists would scream and it's likely dangerous.

Find what works for your unique equipment. In life, politics, and your spine, be flexible and strong.
July 7, 2025 at 10:55 PM
Juggling exercise components gets harder with age. More free time is offset by more needs and longer recovery.

I paused before-bed stretching to avoid issues trying to be an injury. Today the tightness monster appears during a strength set with a message: resume stretching!

Ignorant & criminal leaders don't pause the need for health. It doesn't come from "healthcare," a rebrand of illness or injury care.

Health requires moving. Greenways and trails are the perfect place, but lack restrooms and water. Demand them. More people will get moving. More health.
