Orgs erroneously believe that the messiness of true human thinking, and inconsistency of moods, needs to be made average to affect their market share.

Our team uses thinking styles when we are doing an idea session. Thinking styles come from deep listening about people's purpose/intention. It's upstream from any ideas or solutions.

A reliable way to get some depth when seeking ideas you don't have, is to have access to your team's mental model skyline.

A mental model skyline is a visual structure, showing patterns of cognition built way ahead of time from the concepts from listening sessions. You build it once.

When a team is not stressed and has time to absorb knowledge about an opportunity, their minds will reliably produce novel solutions that support more human complexity. Ideas don’t happen during a scheduled meeting. They happen before it.

Teams need time let bits of information combine in novel ways, and that happens when a person’s mind is not trying to come up with ideas. (Where do ideas happen to you? Ex: during a conversation, walking somewhere, listening to a podcast, on the waking edge of sleep.)

A nutrition council wants people to add more fresh leafy greens to their meals. Instead of trying to change the careful cook who follows a recipe exactly (so it will turn out correctly), they realize they can support this cook's approach by getting the cooking shows and zines to cover these recipes.

🎹 The parent who carefully planned their return trip with four hours buffer to be able to attend their child’s first piano recital could be offered free wi-fi and quiet space to connect with someone at the recital.

Similar ideas arose in other teams.

When this team realized their grumbler had valid reasons for feeling frustrated at the gate, they realized they could actually create solutions to address their frustration.

An airline team referred to the people as “grumblers” when they took up gate attendants’ time during flight delays. Worse, the team imagined these people grumbled in all aspects of their lives, yelled in traffic, and harassed town councillors at civic meetings.
