There are plenty of "pure" puzzle games that did extremely well. Obra Dinn, The Witness, The Talos Principle (1&2), Superliminal, Viewfinder, Antichamber, ...

I don't think it's a coincidence that these are all first person. Blue Prince is as well, so imo it has a decent shot at becoming a hit.

I think it's fine that "indie" has lost its original meaning. The same happened with "indie" as a music genre. That's just how language evolves. It's still valuable as a descriptor.

But I do agree that there should be a dedicated term for those games that are made completely independently.

The problem is that there are too many variables.

Was the publisher involved from the start, or was it only brought on to handle marketing and facilitate porting?

Is Hotline Miami not an indie game because it has a publisher? Is Star Citizen an indie game because it doesn't?

Anyway, it's something I'm trying to change with my (small) YouTube channel, so I'd be down for a chat anytime.

And please keep making PWL. In a sea of shallow, personality-based podcasts, it's refreshing to hear the insights of industry veterans.

You can't really blame the general audience for not being aware. I enjoy and value PWL for what it does, but you are very much the exception to the rule.

And like you said yourself, you can't talk about the state of the industry in public. So how are we supposed to learn?

3. Northgard - 90% off

This Viking-themed RTS is easy to learn but hard to master.

Northgard has a variety of solo, coop and multiplayer modes, and is a shining example of post-launch support, receiving major updates over 6 year after release!
