I don’t know why some people are pretending that Mamdani’s ‘old clips as Mr Cardamom’ are embarrassing.

I think his Mr Cardamom persona makes him funnier and cooler than anyone who finds it embarrassing. Especially the one where he gets Madhur Jaffrey to rap as his cool grandma […]

I had heard tell there's a conspiracy theory out there about PIE never having existed. So I went looking and found a substack making the case. It was based on fundamental misunderstandings of the topic, its arguments and evidence, and methodologies of history, anthropology (including […]

Here's Chris Stringer...

Undersea wall off #brittany's coast evokes the local 'sunken city' stories. Neolithic 7000 years ago

Huge undersea wall dating from 5000 BC found in France
The 120 metre wall was either a fish-trap or a dyke for protection against rising sea-levels, archeologists believe.

A comparative view on #bonobo and #chimpanzee childhoods:

Looks pretty interesting on the 'puzzling Pleistocene' and the archaeology of Australian populations before and during the Last Glacial Maximum

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10963-025-09202-7
The Puzzling Pleistocene: Australian Foragers Before and Through the LGM - Journal of World Prehistory
This paper argues that the Pleistocene record of humans in Australia is much more puzzling than the literature acknowledges. We begin with population estimates, and the claim that pre-LGM populations were small (under 200,000, perhaps even under 100,000); a claim based on the number and character of sites. We argue (i) the inference from archaeological traces of low population numbers is risky because the proxies are demonstrably unreliable; (ii) if pre-LGM numbers were indeed under 200,000, that requires special explanation, and no obvious one is available; (iii) the Pleistocene record suggests that those foragers used their lands in ways not well represented ethnographically, and in ways not currently well understood; (iv) the LGM record itself is mysterious. Previous readings of paleo-environmental data predict an intense crisis in forager lives, but there is little signal of such a crisis.

Darkly? I think the big social media companies do not really want young people to be "empowered digital citizens" or "people who can set boundaries, and make wise choices about the online spaces they participate in"

They want them to be like many adults, kind of helpless and unable to look away […]

I think that schools should take on this role.

You could have a server for a school with mastodon, but not connected to the rest of the fedi, you could network with similar schools. Just like at the school dance the teachers are around so there are limits to how it's used.

Teens could post […]
