Indeed, many can get together and create a shared instance. It should be as stable as the organizations maintaining it.

Sorry, forgot we have only 300 characters here (x5 in Fediscience). Well, the main one, it is decentralized for real and not owned by a specific organization or individual. Creating your own instance is not complex for a moderatelly large company or institution, having IT personnel.

We cannot see the original message, but there is much diversity among instances. Some are maintained by volunteers or associations. Our account is in Fediscience, an instance maintained by a charity. In any case, this approach might have its weaknesses, but also their advantages. The main one...
