All in all, I think it's safe to say Sonic movie 4 will at least loosely follow the Sonic Heroes storyline, and if we're very very lucky, that will pipeline us right into a Shadow standalone movie (since his game is the next in the sequence)

Then there's Amy's post-credit appearance. Amy does in fact exist in Sonic Heroes and along with Cream & Big, have their own driving plot line in chasing down... Metal Sonic, whomst is the Big Bad at the end of Sonic Heroes. Who also appeared at the end of movie 3.

And here's why: in Sonic Heroes, we meet Shadow again post fall-to-Earth (once again in stasis) in one of Eggman's secret bases, having lost his memory of everything prior. We have seen Shadow fall to Earth, though this time he wasn't captured because Eggman is (presumably) dead. And then...
