It’s a Weller WE1010 Desktop soldering iron… something like $100 a few years ago. Looking inside you can see it’s definitely built on a budget. I added all the kapton tape and heat shrink tube to the plugs to add some protection. Can’t believe no connections were protected.

The fun part of modifying your soldering iron is realizing you need to solder something…. inside the iron…. 😆

Eventually, I found my Pinecil USB soldering iron and finished the job.

Yeah you’re probably right. I suppose people were sitting in front of the TV to play SFC in Japan… they would have had to!

Thanks! 😊 I’ve tried a few different speeds but still looking for the sweet spot. I have full control over that. I’m going to try adding a small red gradient on the bottom to see if it helps sell the “base” of the fire, then work on those flames.

Here’s an attempt at a “plasma” effect too. I’m not sure I’ll ever get this one to look good haha

The paper is placed over the display to (1) diffuse the light and (2) protect my retinas. Those LEDs can get super bright if you aren’t knocking down the brightness in code.

I was there too! Phil played such a great set! It was my first time seeing both Phil and Crystal Method, even though I’ve been a fan for years. Hopefully they come back again!
