If you want a battlefield littered with spent caps, smoke, and the smell of electrolytic fluid, I think this is the way to go. Thats how you simulate a revolutionary era rifle with cartridge based ammo in a gritty post society future.

The thing about charging energy weapons is that you're loading all this energy into supercapacitors.
If you pre-charge your capacitor then short it, you can make your design fuseless, so it'll just rapidly discharge (and explode).
It makes for super dangerous ammo crates, but fast firing.
