I think the best advice i can give personally is to try to focus on values. When using a color as a shadow the main thing thats important is that its actually a darker color. (The bottom slider)but some colors also are just darker values by default. (You can create a layer on the top of your canvas-

was looking back at some older art, and its really cool to see the comparison from almost exactly 2 years ago how far ive come, the old one took sooo much work to get it to look right and the one i did today was super half-assed LOL it feels good to see
