So they’re going to make it harder to claim disability benefits but they’ll also make it legal to use assisted dying if you feel like a burden or you have mental health issues. Anybody else see the problem with this?

Terminally I|I Adults (End of Life) Bill: Some of the problems with the Assisted Dying Bill after it left Committee People can qualify for Assisted Dying if: • Doctors presume capacity - 51% certainty is ok • They have learning difficulties or a mental illness • Are depressed or suicidal • Feel they are "a burden" to others • Live in an area where good palliative care is not available • Refuse treatment to qualify • Voluntarily stop eating and drinking and suffer malnutrition as a result Families excluded: Families will not be notified and may not find out until after the death • They will have no route to raise concerns (ie of coercion or abuse) High Court downgraded to a panel • Final approval by a panel: a KC, a psychiatrist and a social worker • Hearing from applicant can be waived, or be prerecorded • The panel does not have to ask questions, make any further enquiries or notify anyone • Only thing the panel must do is hear from one doctor • The panel can sit in private • It has no investigatory powers, • Evidence is not heard on oath • The panel cannot summon witnesses • Decisions are taken by majority vote • Commissioner (judge or retired judge) only considers refused applications Any doctor can raise Assisted Dying • No training required before raising • Can raise with under-18s - who qualify once they're 18 • Can raise with those with Downs Syndrome or learning disabilities Assessment process • If a doctor says someone doesn't qualify for Assisted Death, that person can "shop around" for another doctor • A proxy who doesn't know the person can sign their Assisted Death application • Patients will have a right to Assisted Death but no equal right to having good palliative care • The Doctor must make further enquiries only if they think it 'appropriate' • No requirement to specify uncertainties of diagnosis & prognosis • No requirement to spell out risk of complications from the lethal drugs Hospices and care homes under threat • Hospices and care homes cannot opt out from having Assisted Dying carried out on their premises • The Bill does not prevent the Government financially penalising hospices if they refuse to let Assisted Deaths happen on their premises Few limits on power • The Bill doesn't spell out who will administer Assisted Dying • Ministers will decide, and can make changes: Parliament is largely excluded • There is no regulatory regime in the bill for the Assisted Dying service, nor the drugs • The NHS can outsource Assisted Dying to for-profit companies • The Bill doesn't say how companies would charge for Assisted Dying Independent oversight removed • Chief Medical Officers are no longer responsible for overseeing the system • The Assisted Dying Commissioner will monitor the system and report on it to the Health Secretary: they can "mark their own homework" Four year 'auto commencement' • Extended from two years to four years as the policy is a mess • But Assisted Dying will still have to start no matter how many problems there are with the system or how under-funded Palliative care is: this is not an approach other legislation takes.

Not much I can add to this, the reality of being bedbound sucks. It is not fun or relaxing, for me I am beyond exhausted and in pain, my brain feels like literal mush.
Tumblr post by user post-grammatic-stress: If you've ever told a person who's had to be bedbound for a period of time that you wish you could "just stay in bed", DO IT. Stay in bed. For days. But don't get up if someone needs you to, or you get bored, or you get antsy. Don't do anything other than rest. Just lie in your bed, whether you need to get stuff done around the house or socialize or anything else "productive". You'll have to cancel on people, you'll disappoint them, they won't understand. And if you're thinking, "well, i CAN'T just be in bed. I’m mmmyoursquid People love to talk about whether or not disabled people can work but if you can work just fine and your disability is destroying your ability to have a life outside of work (because work takes all your energy and more) Dead silence. Nobody cares. eenymeenypia File this under, oh you can be active for 4 hours? You can work part-time. Um no, I have to get ready for work (30 min) get to work (15 min) get home from work (15 min) feed myself all day (30 min) maintain myself, my home and my life (15 min, yeah right), which leaves 15 min for work and absolutely nothing else. chameleonchild This is so accurate, back after I'd relapsed I wanted to try and go in for one class at school so I could still stay in contact with the education system. I let slip during a meeting that I managed to drag myself to that I could manage about 4 hours of activity a week, which the teacher sprang on to mean I was being lazy for just trying to get to 1 hour class. Never matter that it was 30 minutes travel, that I would have to get washed and dressed, that I would probably still need to recover for 3 days from it. Far too often abled people see the things they do easily as "non activities"', they don't realise that for many disabled people these things have to be carefully planned and measured, and sometimes they simply can't be done.

Labour showing their true colours again. This has been the final nail in the coffin for me. They’re just red Tories. Can we get a government that stops violating the human rights of its disabled citizens?? Is that too much to ask for?

Post by Fightback on Facebook Now the dust has settled on yesterday's victory decision for PLP and their client, here's what it means to the proposed changes suggested by the previous government to those on ESA and UC and future claimants. The true or primary motive behind the consultation was to reduce spending on disability benefits, which was not disclosed. The consultation papers had presented the proposals as being about helping people to move into or closer to the labour market, without providing any evidence at all to explain how this purported aim would actually be met. A consultation that ran for just under 8 weeks was too short, given the importance of the proposals and the additional time that Deaf and Disabled people and their organisations need to engage meaningfully in this context. So the planned changes to scrap certain elements of the Work Capability Assessment and legislation, and find many disabled people fit for some work, cannot go ahead in their current proposed form. Continued post by Fightback on Facebook The plan was to radically reform or remove the LCWRA and support group components under mobility, mental health and the risk of harm in the work place elements. Leaving thousands fit for some work related activity that would have been unable to travel etc. This now cannot go ahead as it was proposed. This decision could hopefully influence the new Government when deciding to adopt the previous Government's new reforms in the white paper for PIP too. This judgement should make them think twice about adopting the same drastic policy changes, including the ridiculous voucher suggestion, and other changes proposed by the previous Government. It is a huge step in the right direction in showing that those in power cannot just change the rules and ruin lives just like that, they must hold a meaningful and proper assessment and consultation to give a chance to see the real effect it will have on disabled people. Ugh this. And finding out that the DWP have been pulling up social media feeds during disability tribunals to prove disabled people are lying. I’m not taking selfies from my bed!! Social media gets the highlights. Although this year has been particularly tough, much fewer highlights to share.

Well, that’s ominous.
