If we set an export tax just below Qatar's it would still be the cheapest gas in the world

The PRRT was always meant to collect tax on gas but it relies on the gas companies telling the govt. how much tax they should pay. Surprisingly they tell the govt they shouldn't pay any tax

They do have a majority but need 60 votes in the senate to pass legislation which is more than half

Trump is a genius. He has effectively introduced a Federal consumption tax that hits his base while convincing them it's going to bring back manufacturing that will MAGA

We have to give up on profit based taxes for multinational exporters. They are just too easy to avoid. A plain old volume based royalty is much harder.
July 29, 2025 at 2:45 AM
Actually very smart of Trump. Parades a big tax cut while introducing a consumption tax via tariffs. Oligarchs get the tax cut. Ordinary people pay more for most things. Deficit nowhere near as bad as forecast. Win win win.

We have a surplus of solar power. Do we follow Norway's example?
July 9, 2025 at 11:40 AM
Norway has always had surplus hydro power. It made sense to electrify the country and sell their fossil fuels.

There have been instances where priests get newstart. So God not such a reliable employer.

They are foreign companies who get a deduction from Australian tax for any income taxed offshore. Since most are domiciled in 10% tax jurisdictions they prefer to pay 10% rather than 30%. This could be cured with a higher withholding tax rate. 50% may encourage them to pay more tax in Australia

Lots of tradies run their businesses through a SMSF. Of course it doesn't meet the sole purpose test but lots of auditors will look the other way. 15% tax is a powerful incentive.
June 2, 2025 at 10:19 AM
I saw 30%. So if you don't liquify it and export it and you put it into the domestic pipeline network you get50% more gas. A no brainer for an export tax.

One wonders how long newscorpse will put up with loss making papers and sky. Sky UK in trouble. Once it has gone Oz papers and TV will be wound up.
June 1, 2025 at 9:26 AM
We need a gas export tax. The PRRT is so easy to avoid it will never raise any revenue. Treasury have been forecasting it will raise money next year for the last 20 years. Japanese reselling our gas because they no longer need it. Why should Japanese taxpayers benefit but not Australian

Ute's with bull bars lose nearly half their crumple zone. Hit something at more than 70kmh and you're dead.

Of course if you arrived with minimal luggage and burner phone you would also be detained because that's very suspicious
May 24, 2025 at 6:49 AM
Labor needs to get in early with a gas export tax. The gas industry will launch a massive advertising campaign to unseat Labor at the next election but after 3 years voters will be so tired of it they will ignore it
May 24, 2025 at 6:34 AM
Taxing multinationals based on their profits no longer works. So easy to avoid. Need to switch to turnover based taxes like GST. Hard to avoid when you buy a new yacht or porches.

Tarrifs will mean a move away from US$ as the world reserve currency. The Chinese gave the US TV's, shoes, etc and the US gave them bits of paper. A great deal for the US. Now the Chinese are spending those bits of paper

Labors PRRT is a wonderfully efficient tax but relies on unverified data from the gas companies. Unsurprisingly it has never raised any revenue and it never will. Set a volume based tax just below Qatar's. It would still be the cheapest gas in the world
