Just followed! The only A+ of my life was for a paper I wrote in grad school on Tolkien (I do modern Japan normally but couldn’t pass up the opportunity when I got the go ahead from my prof). The more granular the better!

I’ve got a whole list of fun immigrant kanji isms! My absolute favorite is 聖林 for Hollywood. Get it? It’s both a play on words and a literal translation. They were so creative!

Sorry, I just reread and realized this person is a native English speaker. Things like Nanka are terms that have been passed down in the Japanese American community even though most descendants didn’t learn the language. Like Rafu. So lots of ways they could have picked this up!

南加 and 北加 are both old abbreviations for southern and Northern California. 加州 is how they used to write California. I don’t hear recent transplants use these as that often but they’re still used in writing in the local Japanese language media.
