You might consider Algernon Blackwood. He was an English writer and contemporary of HP Lovecraft. His stories are creepy & atmospheric, and by today’s standards pretty tame with regard to violence. I love his short stories. He perfectly bridges the time between Poe and horror/sci-fi of the 50s.

It’s great, to be sure. For me, though, My Kingdom and Ocean Rain are tops. My world just stops when either is playing.
