Perhaps this is a better cause of increased diagnosis: states started closing mental institutions because the federal government stopped funding them. The population was there the whole time, only hidden before the 80s.

Driving to Florida in March and October always led to at least two additional hours on the road each way due to spring break and fall break. Louisville to Orlando. Can you fly to Tampa and rent a car?
